Memories #35-39, Skill #8

(#35, No one believes in the future: Ep. 10, significant neutral; won in Chance's kissing game. Item: chocolate coin in Kunzite foil.)

*Homura wakes up in the hospital in the wake of Madoka death #3. Moemura is dead; long live Lineface Homura.*

Homura: No one believes in the future. No one can accept the future. Then I . . .

-Ten Thousand Miles Apart +10,000 (but -9,900 for AATHER DEVELOPMENT)

Not too much. Although this is a brief but pivotal moment, representing her loss of her last scraps of faith in her fellow magical girls, the blow is really, really cushioned by her life in Aather. She understands why she felt that way, but it doesn't affect her too much right now. She's moved past the dark place she was in during this memory.

(#36, Maybe it's because I'm no longer human: Ep. 7, trivial negative; won in HEART GAMES. Item: Kunzite-colored spun sugar bird.)

*Homura and Madoka stand on the roof of their school, talkin' about heavy magical girl things.*

Madoka: Homura, you knew?

*Homura nods.*

Madoka: Why didn't you say something?

Homura: I've tried before. No one believed me.

Madoka: Why would Kyubey do something so cruel?

Homura: He doesn't believe he's being cruel. Human values don't mean anything to him. It's simply payment for the miracle . . . is how he'll reply.

Madoka: That's a ridiculous price! He turned Sayaka into that! She just wanted to heal the person she loves!

Homura: But there's no disputing that that's a miracle. She made the impossible come true. Even if Miki Sayaka had spent her entire life caring for him, he never would have been able to play again. Even a a whole life doesn't normally buy a miracle. But that's exactly what he's selling.

Madoka: You mean she can never have her normal life back?

Homura: I told you to give up on Miki Sayaka.

Madoka: But she saved my life! If Sayaka hadn't become a magical girl, Hitomi and I would have died!

Homura: Don't confuse gratitude with responsibility. There is no way you can save her. You don't owe her anything. You don't have to pay her back. Don't get into matters that don't concern you.

Madoka: Homura, how can you always be so cold?

Homura: Maybe . . . it's because I'm no longer human.

-Ten Thousand . . . you know I'm going to stop recording this particular fakestat I think

She learned that she's really not looking forward to when Madoka remembers this conversation, sobbbb!! Homura has gotten to a place where she's starting to want to bang her head against a wall every time she remembers something like this. "I KNOW WHY I WAS DOING THIS BUT NOW I FEEL SO STUPID AAAAGH"

(#37, Confession: Ep. 11, significant neutral; won in Lady of the Lake's game on Day 155. Item: cup of tea decorated with a Kunzite-colored vine pattern [reusable; 2/3 uses remaining])

*The memory begins in the middle of yet another titanically heavy conversation.*

Madoka: Somehow . . . I really want to believe what you're saying . . . I don't want to think you'd lie to me . . . I can't believe that it will be all right! I can't believe that you're telling me the truth . . .

Homura: There's no way I could convey my real feelings to you.

Madoka: Homura?

Homura: Because . . . I live in a different time from you!

*And that's where the walls come down, and Homura runs over to throw her arms around Madoka.*

Homura: I came from the future. I met you countless times . . . and I saw you die every time. I looked for a way to save you; a way to change fate. Trying again and again and again . . .

Madoka: That's . . .

Homura: I'm sorry . . . you don't get it, right? I'm weirding you out, right? It's only been a month since I transferred to the school and met you. But for me . . . for me, you are . . .

Homura: The more I repeated the circle, the more our timelines drifted apart. Our feelings, too . . . and my words wouldn't reach you anymore. I think I got lost a long time ago.

Madoka: Homura . . .

Homura: The most important thing to me was saving you. It was the only thing left showing me the way. You don't have to understand. I don't care if my words won't reach you. But please! Please, let me protect you!

-Because yeah this is basically the Platonic solid of the "ten thousand miles apart" memories!!

Basically this memory is all about the sheer weight of her emotional isolation from everyone else, Madoka especially! It's a little hard to shrug this much of it off, but Aatherdevelopment helps--she's trying to take this as inspiration to not let this happen again. But the fear that it might lurks in the back of her mind.

(#38, Oh by the way.: Ep. 10, trivial neutral; won in Odile's profess-your-love game. Item: a blood ruby [reusable; 4/5 uses remaining])

*SO HOMURA BASICALLY SNEAKS UP TO MADOKA'S WINDOW AT NIGHT AFTER HAVING KILLED A KYUBEY.*

Madoka: Who's there?!

Homura: Madoka! Even if someone shows up promising you miracles in exchange for helping him, you must not do what he says.

Madoka: Homu . . . ?

*And then Homura ollies out.*

-Why did I think that would work +1000

. . . She learned she didn't always think her "keep Madoka from making a contract" plans through very well . . .

(#39, Soloing the Walpurgis: Ep. 1/10, significant negative; won in Cheshire's game on Day 162. Item: a white chocolate bone [untaken])

*The Walpurgis Night has fucked shit up in a serious way, and Homura is the only one left to fight it. It's not going well. In the distance, Madoka is terrified, and Kyubey starts to work his guilt-trip magic. Homura recovers from being knocked out to see Madoka watching the battle . . . with Kyubey right there.*

Homura: Madoka! Don't listen to what he says!

*But Madoka can't hear her.*

Homura: Don't listen to him! He's tricking you!

*And Madoka nods, plunges into darkness--the Walpurgis forgotten as she screams out.*

Homura: DON'T!

*But the light of a newly-made Soul Gem flares into being . . . and in a terrifyingly brief amount of time, the battle ends.*

Kyubey: She really was amazing when she transformed. I thought she'd become the strongest magical girl, but to defeat the Walpurgis Night in just one attack . . .

Homura: And how will this end? If she's even stronger than you thought.

Kyubey: Sooner or later, her end will be the same. As the strongest magical girl, she defeated her greatest enemy. Now there's nothing left for her but to become the most evil witch ever. As Madoka is now, it won't take long before she's destroyed this planet. But, well, that's humanity's problem. I surpassed our energy collection quota by far.

*Homura stands, turning to walk away.*

Kyubey: Won't you fight?

Homura: No. This is not my battlefield.

Kyubey: Akemi Homura, you're . . .

-Fucking Kyubey >8||| +a google
-Fuck being a magical girl, fuck it forever +1000

This is a kind of interesting one, because with her Aather development it goes a long way to reinforcing her belief in the need for a TEAM EFFORT. If she can have everyone else at her side during the battle, maybe shit like this won't happen! Maybe Madoka's huge, terrifying potential will never have to be unleashed!

(Skill #8: Hand-to-Hand Combat: Mundane, won in Kitsune's lie-guessing game. Item: a ripe white peach.)

PRETTY EASY, it's some slick fightin' moves, like knockout blows and shit. Seen only once in the series, sob, but hey.
